The Major in Human Resource Management will prepare students to work in the fields of business administration and human resources. With a specific selection of coursework, students will be prepared to take certification examinations offered by the Society of Human Resource Management, including Professional in Human Resources, Senior Professional in Human Resources, and Global Professional in Human Resources

Human Resource Management Major

This major provides the cutting edge skills and knowledge needed for a career in human resources in both public and private sector businesses and organizations. Some of the functions of a human resource professional are planning, recruitment, selection, placement and orientation of personnel; training and development; labor relations; management of employee reviews, wages and benefits; and planning and development of policies and procedures. Students are prepared for work in business administration and human resources upon completion of the human resource management major.

Depending on the courses completed, the student can prepare for one of several examinations offered by the Society of Human Resource Management, including Professional in Human Resources, Senior Professional in Human Resources, and Global Professional in Human Resources. The major includes training in not only human resource functions, but also courses in management and organization theory, organizational behavior and development approaches, labor relations theory and practice, interpersonal skill development, and women’s perspectives in management.

Program Objectives

Graduates with a major in human resource management will be able to:

  • Understand the processes of job analysis, staffing, appraisal and compensation, career training, and development.

  • Understand the history of union/management relations and associated major federal, state, and local legislation, executive orders, and court decisions

  • Use quantitative and qualitative analytical research methods to evaluate human resource proposals and solve problems
  • Effective written and oral communications consistent with the business and professional environment should be developed.

  • Restate and implement the principles of human resources within the parameters of a global setting

A Certificate in Human Resources Management allows supervisory employees in both the public and private sectors to maximize their skills with the theory and practical knowledge the modern workforce demands and allows them to climb to the next level. This program will prepare the student for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification examinations. With careful selection of major and elective courses, it is possible to complete the certification program and the Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management concurrently.
