Office Assistant

The role of administrative and office assistants is constantly evolving. Today, administrative and office assistants perform many tasks that were previously reserved for managers while managers now assume some tasks previously performed by administrative assistants, such as typing or word processing. However, the role of administrative and office assistants still remains that of managing the more clerical-oriented tasks in an office in order to keep it organized and running smoothly.

Administrative and office assistants may answer telephones, receive visitors, manage correspondence, plan and schedule meetings, take minutes, make travel arrangements, requisition supplies, maintain databases and files, manage projects, create documents, and update websites, among other tasks.

The work that administrative and office assistants perform can vary greatly and they need to remain flexible; they must be ready to meet the tasks and the challenges that may arise in the course of their work. This may include learning new processes or technologies.

Administrative and office assistants may also be the most recognizable face of a business to the outside world, which means that the administrative assistant’s professionalism and ability to do a good job are vital to the business or organization as a whole.
