Businesses rely on marketing activities to attract customers and generate profits. Though marketing experts like Regis McKenna argue that "marketing is everything," from the receptionist to the CEO, marketing management in companies today is usually more limited in its scope. Marketing management is the effective planning and control of a company's marketing activities, and marketing managers are charged with applying good marketing practices and making judicious use of a company's marketing resources, staff, and budget.

In the course of their work, marketing managers may perform marketing research and competitor analysis, monitor demand for certain products, determine consumer demand and preferences, develop products and price points, identify potential customers and market segments, write marketing plans and customer profiles, create marketing strategies, plan and execute marketing campaigns and promotions, write press releases and articles, create advertising, position brands, promote products, and evaluate the effectiveness of overall marketing activities as well as specific campaigns.
