A certificate or diploma in payroll administration from an accredited institution opens the door to entry-level employment in human resources or payroll administration in a business operation. Graduates of the program gain knowledge and experience in and out of the classroom that allow them to carry it into an entry-level work environment.
The primary focus is payroll and accounting and core courses include accounting fundamentals, office procedures, computerized accounting, business communications, payroll fundamentals, customer relations, and interpersonal skills training.
The payroll administration program covers both payroll services and office administration while not forgetting the importance of standard business management skills. While the focus is on payroll, students also gain exposure to office management skills, financial planning and analysis, and employee satisfaction. Communication skills are taught to ensure the graduate understands the importance of customer service in his or her career choice as a payroll administrator.
The standard payroll administration program is made up of forty weeks of training that prepares students with the skills needed to enter the job force. The primary focus is payroll and accounting and core courses include accounting fundamentals, office procedures, computerized accounting, business communications, payroll fundamentals, customer relations, and interpersonal skills training. Payroll legislation and compliance, Power Point procedures, and database and spreadsheets are also covered throughout the payroll administrative curriculum.
Throughout the accounting fundamentals modules, students are provided with a general background of accounting along with the basics of bookkeeping. Fundamentals include journalizing transactions, posting accounts to ledgers, preparing a trial ledger, debits and credits, asset and liabilities assessment, and daily transaction procedures. Students learn how to read financial statements as well as adjust and close accounts.
The payroll course modules are typically broken into two parts and upon completion the student understands how to calculate the net pay of employees, calculate termination pay, complete a record of employment, prepare the necessary accounting documentation for payroll, and complete year end records. Communication skills are emphasized throughout the payroll modules so that students are able to effectively communicate with employees as well as stakeholders.
