Typical MBA program curriculum contents integrate practical academics with a hands-on approach to real-world experience. Students participating in an MBA program gain a strong foundation of business knowledge, practical experience in a corporate or local residency program, and specialization in a career path. The MBA program is geared toward students who seek to pursue knowledge in business and develop their leadership skills. The MBA program is normally broken into four semesters depending on the school and typically runs two years.
Elective course options include international business, real estate and urban land economics, entrepreneurship, business model innovation, behavioral finance, risk management, global marketing strategy, strategic brand management, or topics in taxation.
A typical first year MBA student focuses on the foundational courses offered by the program. Core classes include studies in accounting, business strategies, economics, finance, marketing and management, operations management, statistics, and technology or information systems. Core classes are mandatory the first year of the program but some schools allow the flexibility of incorporating business elective courses. During the first year of the program students are taught the fundamentals for running an organization. Students are encouraged to engage themselves in class in order to lead and solve problems. Teamwork is emphasized and students are broken into small groups with one designated team leader. Most schools venture away from the standard lectures and information-based coursework and allow the students to focus their attention on organizational perspectives of business. In doing so, students become familiar with both the internal and external roles of an organization.
