Human Resources Program Contents

Human Resources programs have become increasingly popular as an educational option as the growing demand for people with personnel skills continues to rise. Human Resources degree programs are typically found at the bachelor's degree level but are also available as associate's and master's degrees.

The goal of a Bachelor's degree in Human Resources program is to help students learn how to maximize employee productivity for the benefit of the employees themselves as well as the organization

The associate's degree is generally two years in length and covers the basic principles of human resources management. Upon graduation students are prepared for entry-level employment as a Human Resources Assistant, Training Assistant, Human Resources Secretary, or a Personnel Assistant. Coursework includes general education courses such as college-level Math, English, Communications, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Human Resources Core classes.

Core classes such as Business Law teach students about labor laws, business ethics, unions, and labor economics. Other core classes include Personnel, Staff Management, Human Resources Policies and Procedures, Hiring and Recruiting Practices, Contracts, Labor Relations, Employment Law, and Organizational Behavior. Associate's degrees may or may not have an internship component to the program although it is highly desired by employers.

Human Resources programs at the bachelor's level help teach students critical human resources skills such as employee selection, employee training, performance and appraisal, employee incentive programs, discipline, and compensation. Students also learn theories and best practices to implement organizational policies and procedures. A large emphasis is placed on interpersonal and group communication as well as motivational theory and tactics. The goal of a Bachelor's degree in Human Resources program is to help students learn how to maximize employee productivity for the benefit of the employees themselves as well as the organization.

Bachelor's degree programs include general education courses, Human Resources core courses, and electives. Many programs require the student to be admitted into the Human Resources major by completing program prerequisites and having junior standing. Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Human Resources typically takes four to five years.
